Are you trying to be a Christian?
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved). – Ephesians 2:4-5
When I was a Boy Scout, I received my swimming merit badge, and I thought, ‘You know, that was pretty easy. I think I’ll get my lifeguard badge too!’
Well, I soon discovered a lot about getting a lifeguard badge. I learned that when you’re rescuing someone, you’d better keep your distance while they are still trying to save themselves or you’ll be in danger of being pulled down. It is only when they give up and realize, ‘I can’t save myself’ – that you can help them.
You see, a lot of us are trying to save ourselves. I can always spot people who don’t know anything about being a Christian. They say, “Well, I’m trying to be a Christian.” I want to reply, “How’s that working for you?”
The truth is, we cannot change ourselves. We need a Savior. That’s why God sent Jesus to us at Christmas. And He is ready to rescue us when we stop trying to rescue ourselves.
