But I have trusted in Thy lovingkindness; my heart shall rejoice in Thy salvation. - PSALM 13:5

Kindness is a kid coming home from school hungry for a jelly sandwich and mom takes two pieces of bread and smears them with rich jam. Lovingkindness is the youngster asking for a jelly sandwich and mother also adds peanut butter. One makes the heart happy, but the other makes it celebrate!

Salvation is the demonstration of lovingkindness. In Christ, God removes our guilt. But then He goes beyond that and gives us Christ’s innocence. The guilt-cleansed heart is happy, but the innocence-given heart positively rejoices. When the Psalmist faced scary threats and passed through shaky times, he leaned on the lovingkindness of God.

Long before the New Covenant of grace, the Holy Spirit lit the heart with the light of God’s mercy. That’s what David relied on and it is why he could rejoice though he had every human reason to be miserable. Lovingkindness means God spreads on mercy when we fear all we will get is justice.

Make a list of God’s lovingkindnesses extended to you, then spend time celebrating by praising Him for His specific mercies in your life.
