The eloquence of the whole heart

June 05, 2018
Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the LORD with a whole heart, and King David also rejoiced greatly. - 1 CHRONICLES 29:9

A wealthy family gathered in England for a banquet. A famous actor attended, and was asked to quote something. The noted orator spoke the 23rd Psalm magnificently, to great applause. The host scanned the room and spotted a man he knew to be deeply spiritual, and requested him to repeat the same passage. “I can’t follow such eloquence,” the man said. But the host insisted. The old gentleman stumbled through the verses. When he finished, a holy hush settled over the room. Everyone had the same question on their mind: Why was there applause for the actor and deep reverence as the old man quoted the same Bible verses? The actor himself understood. “The difference between him and me is that I know the Psalm, but he knows the shepherd.”

One can know the Bible with mental sharpness and even display emotions like the finest actor. But there is an eloquence that comes from knowing God with one’s whole heart that goes beyond human abilities. The voice may be halting, the grammar fractured, but the eloquence of whole-heart devotions is what God uses to transform lives!
