The ‘whatever’ heart

November 02, 2018
‘I know your deeds that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.’ - REVELATION 3:15-16

“Whatever” has worked its way into our lingo as the expression of ultimate apathy. The “whatever” heart cares for nothing. It is neither hot nor cold. Solomon succumbs to the “whatever” heart in the spiritual rebellion of his old age, and writes, don’t be excessively righteous, but, on the other hand, don’t be too wicked either. (ECCLESIASTES 7:16)

Some ancient Christians actually thought apathy could be positive. Extinguish the passions like the Stoics do, counseled St. Macarius and others. The “doctrine of apathy” actually became a creed of sorts. The “whatever” mentality may be core doctrine in Zen Buddhism, but not in the faith of Jesus Christ. He calls us to engagement, involvement, and action on the front lines of human struggling and anguish.

People fueled by the Holy Spirit are passionate with the desire to make a difference for God. Eagerly they draw on God’s holiness, wisdom, love and power. But the “whatever” heart is lukewarm and an abomination to God’s heart.

TODAY’S FOCUS
If you have fallen into apathy because of burnout or sheer laziness, ask the Lord to restore the passion to your heart.
