Waterholes in the desert

August 22, 2018
For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, "I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.” - ISAIAH 57:15

Out in a parched desert, the best chance for water is in the low places. The lower the ground, the greater the chance of water. This helps us understand better why Jesus says “Congratulations!” to “those who mourn.” You don’t get refreshed until you get low. The lower you go, the more potential there is for refreshing.

This is because in the heavens, God dwells at the highest place, but in creation, He resides in the lowest spot—the human heart that is humbled by brokenness or depression. “Contrite” hearts are those who grieve over sin. Literally, the “lowly of spirit” are the depressed. Down there in our depression and despair, God can at last fill us up.

For both the broken and depressed, God promises “revival.” When His children get to the lowest place, their hearts become like waterholes in a desert, able to hold the refreshing rain of God’s very being. So, if you’re currently broken and depressed, you are to be congratulated. You’re at the place where God can pour His life into you afresh!

TODAY’S FOCUS
If you are broken or depressed, ask God to fill you up with His Spirit. Pray for others you may know who are broken and depressed.
